Antoni

Gaudi

The creation continues incessantly through the media of man. But man does not create — he discovers. Those who look for the laws of Nature as a support for their new works collaborate with the creator.

Because of this, originality consists in returning to the origin.

— Antoni Gaudi

natural

forms

Nature does not present any object to us in a monochrome",
thought Gaudi. He designed bright, colourful buildings,
he decorated them with broken ceramic tiles,
stained glass, wrought iron
and sandstone.

The natural world: organic, natural forms
became the main source of
inspiration for artistic and
constructive tasks.

religious

motives

A mood of religious commitment is present in many
of Gaudi's projects, made in his mature age.
This is particularly evident in the
Sagrada Familia cathedral.

Park Guell

While preserving the natural landscape, Gaudí designed
an enormous park. The gradient of the heights
allowed to create an ensemble of
unusual terraces stairs, railings.
The area of the park is more
than 17 hectares.

Güell's original plan was to create a village where people would
live in harmony with nature. However, the land was not
popular, because it was difficult to arrive
here because of the underdeveloped
transport infrastructure.

Casa Vicens

Vegetal ornaments and wrought iron elements — the craftsman's style. The facade is made green
and white tiles in a staggered pattern,
organically combining with
floral motifs.

The house was built for businessman Manuel Vicens,
owner of a brick and ceramic tile factory.
One of the first modernist buildings
in Europe and the architect's
first major order.

Casa Mila

The design is amazing, Gaudi came up with a system
ventilation, the rooms were never hot. There was
a window in every room. An garage was built
underneath the house. That had
never been seen before.

The house looks like cliffs washed by the waves of the sea. The wrought iron elements on the balconies resemble seaweed. The wavy lines and the game
of light and shade create the illusion
of movement.

The building tells the legend of St George, the patron saint of Catalonia, who defeated a huge dragon with his sword.
The roof is scales shimmering in the sun, the chimney
is the hilt of a blade, the bones and skulls are
the victims of the terrible monster.

A feature of the house is the absence of straight lines,
in the decorative elements of the frontage are
curved, wavy scrolls. The arched windows
of the first floor start at the floor level
and are lined with an exquisite
mosaic pattern.

Sagrada Familia

Under Gaudi's direction, a facade of the Nativity was created.
The artist who passed away did not leave any finished
drawings or instructions. A generation of architects
led the construction, one of whom was
Gaudí's student and associate,
Domènech Sugránez.

Considering Gothic to be an outdated and uninteresting trend,
he used only the basic elements of this style, supplementing
them with features of Art Nouveau, Baroque and Oriental
exoticism. The surfaces of the cathedral are
covered with a stone pattern
of biblical themes.
